"Condoms Being Returned, Replaced by Brand Names" |
|
|
|
Over the last week,
community organizations in the District returned as many as 70,000
city-issued condoms as the Health Department makes plans to distribute
name-brand replacements.
A campaign to increase condom use in the District has been marred by highly
publicized complaints about the mustard-yellow packets' durability and
appearance, city health officials acknowledged. After a mid-September
meeting addressing the negative feedback, the condom manufacturer offered to
replace all remaining supplies with Trojan, Lifestyles and other brand-name
condoms commonly found on drugstore shelves.
Along with the inventories sent back by the organizations, the department's
HIV/AIDS
Administration had 350,000 condoms that were never distributed.
On Friday, a spokesperson for Mayor Adrian M. Fenty said the Health
Department has received 125,000 of the new condoms, and 400,000 more are
expected in the upcoming weeks. Community-based groups should begin
receiving new supplies within days, the spokesperson said. |
